- Today we mark a unique festival in the ancient Christian church, dating back to the 400s AD. In the book of Revelation, the archanchel Michael is described as casting Satan out of heaven (Rev. 12:7-12). In the western church, Sept. 29th became a special day to remember the wonderful work of the angels created by God.
This morning Prof. Dennis Marzold will guide us through some of the hymns that describe this comforting teaching in the Bible. - Prelude: Lord, Let At Last Thine Angels Come J.S. Bach
- Hymn 547 Jesus, Brightness of the Father
- Versicles and Gloria patri (led by choir)
- The Office Hymn 545 Lord God, We All To Thee Give Praise
(Everyone may be seated for the hymn. Remember that as you sing,
you are teaching, admonishing and encouraging each other with God's word.)
All: 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16
North, or Lectern Side: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14
South, or Pulpit Side: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 - Kyrie, Lord's Prayer, p. 116
- All: Merciful Father in heaven,
Bless us, sustain us,
and let Your angels watch over us and care for us.
They are constantly in Your presence and do Your bidding,
send them to defend us in body and soul
against the crafts and assaults of the devil and his allies,
both visible and invisible,
so that we may remain with You unto the end.
We ask this all in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ,
the King of angels,
the Lord of the armies of heaven,
and our Savior. Amen. - Benedicamus and Benediction (led by the choir)
- Hymn 406:3 Lord, Let At Last Thine Angels Come
- Postlude: Concerto in A Minor, 1st mvmt A. Vivaldi
