- Responsory
P: Teach us, O Lord, to number our days, C: That we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Man who is born of woman Is of few days and full of trouble.
For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.
He comes forth like a flower and fades away; He flees like a shadow and
does not continue.
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken;
For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certainwe can carry nothing out.
For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.
We have been consumed by Your anger, And by Your wrath we are terrified.
You have set our iniquities before You, Our secret sins in the light of Your countenance.
For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh. For dust you are, And to dust you shall return. - Hymn 527, In the Midst of Earthly Life
- Collect for Ash Wednesday
P: Let us pray: Almighty and everlasting God, You hate nothing that You have made and You forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of You, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: Amen. - Choir - Psalmody: Psalm 51:2,3: "Wash Me Throughly" S.S. Wesley
Wash me throughly from my wickedness, and forgive me all my sin.
For I acknowledge my faults and my sin is ever before me. - The Passion History of Our Lord: John 18:1-14
When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, "Whom are you seeking?" They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am He." And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground. Then He asked them again, "Whom are you seeking?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way," that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, "Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none." Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?" Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year. Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. - Hymn 287, 1, 2, 4 & 5, Jesus, I Will Ponder Now

Scripture
Psalm 51:16-17 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart— these, O God, You will not despise.
