- Prelude
- Prayer for the Week
P: Lord God, heavenly Father, in Your divine wisdom and fatherly goodness You cause Your children to bear the cross; C: You send many afflictions upon us to subdue our sinful flesh, and to enliven our hearts to faith, hope and unceasing prayer; P: We beseech You to have mercy upon us and graciously deliver us out of our trials and afflictions, C: so that we may perceive Your grace and fatherly help, and with all the saints forever praise and worship You; All: through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. Amen. - Hymn 23 - Lord Jesus Christ, Be Present Now View
vv. 1, 2, 4 - Reading: Hebrews 11:13-16 View
All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. - Devotion
